Wedding Attire: Black Dress

Dear Edith

What is the proper dress for attending an afternoon wedding? Is a black dress ever acceptable?

Answer

Black used to signify mourning as you know, but nowadays a dressy black cocktail dress with jewelry is being worn to weddings. I hope this helps.

Bridesmaid Dress Color

Dear Edith

I am currently planning an Autumn wedding. I have been racking my brain about what color I want my bridesmaids dresses to be, could you give me some selections of color?

Answer

I suggest you look at the room where the wedding is to take place and take your cue from that. Is the carpet green? Red? what color are the walls? Then choose a softer color that blends with the surroundings. I hope this helps.

Evening Wedding Attire

Dear Edith

If an invitation indicates that the wedding is going to occur at 6pm or later, should the guests assume it is black tie?

Answer

My dear, I never assume anything! Since the invitation does not state black tie, it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask around. I hope this helps.

June Wedding Attire

Dear Edith

What type of attire/scheme should there be for a June Wedding?

Answer

The month has not that much to do with your decision. It has to do with the formality of your wedding, the reception and the time of day. If it is in a church or garden, etc. etc. I hope this helps.

Second Wedding Attire

Dear Edith

I am planning my 2nd wedding, is a white gown okay? In the past it was not, have thoughts changed?

Answer

Yes, a white or off white gown is fine, still it could be toned down somewhat in style. No veil please! A hair ornament or tiara or flowers in your hair are ok. I hope this helps.

Wedding Attire

Dear Edith

My son is getting married and his bride to be is telling him that her attendants dresses and his tuxedo should match. I say they shouldn’t HELP!

Answer

Sorry the bride is a little off base. The groom’s outfit should be proper for the time of day and the location of the wedding, church–beach? I Don’t know what she means by match? Please clarify.

Wedding Attire: Evening Wedding

Dear Edith

What’s the proper attire for guests of weddings performed at 6:00 pm?

Answer

Thank you for writing. That depends on the formality of the wedding. Does it say “black tie” on the invitation? If not, a man should wear a dark suit and tie and a woman a short or ankle length dress. There is no harm in asking around as well. I hope this helps.

Wedding Attire for the Bride

Dear Edith

What does a bride wear for an afternoon wedding?

Answer

Much depends on the formality of the wedding, and where the ceremony takes place, in church or in a garden. The time is of no special consequence, only a consideration. I hope this helps

RESPONSE

Dear Edith

It would be slightly dressy but not formal, and it would be outside (in January). [Arizona] Any help?

Answer

The bride could wear a tea length gown or a silk dress with a matching jacket or whatever she feels is becoming to her. There are no hard and fast fashion rules. She could wear a hair ornament or flowers or even a hat. I hope this helps!

Wedding: Wedding Gloves

Dear Edith

Are there certain months were you can or cannot wear gloves with the wedding dress?

Answer

No my dear, no certain months!

Wedding Lingerie

Dear Edith

I’m wondering where I can get very classy, beautiful, wedding lingerie, is there anything online?

Answer

Sorry, this is not an etiquette question but have you checked with Victoria’s Secret line of lingerie?

Wedding Attire: Veil Question

Dear Edith

Is the bride supposed to wear her veil during the reception, or remove it?

Answer

This is optional and it depends on the veil. You might want to discuss this with the buyer at the store where you bought it. I hope this helps.

Wedding Veils

Dear Edith

I was told that if you are a single parent getting married for the 1st time, it is not proper to wear your veil completely covering your head/face. I was told that I have to wear it “off of my face”.

Answer

It would be much more tasteful, if I were you, to not to wear a veil at all, but instead wear one of the fashionable tiaras or hair ornaments instead! I hope this helps
