Since my daughter and her fiance have chosen to have their wedding in TN, would it be proper for us to give an engagement party here where we live to cover friends and guests who probably will not go to the wedding because of the distance? By the way, TN is chosen because his family lives there (point of contention) since we’ll be signing checks..but we have given in on this point. So, would the engagement party be proper?

Yes, of course, you could have an engagement party or simply a “reception” in honor of the couple, either before or after the wedding! This is done all the time! I hope this answer helps you.
